Worcester’s Wild Week: From Bankrupties to Boos and Building Bumps

Worcester, USASunday, July 5, 2026
A group of 44 creditors from nine states stepped into Worcester’s court scene, filing a joint claim that their real‑estate firm owed them more than two million dollars. The collective action came because many of the debtors were newcomers from South America and Africa, finding it hard to protect their interests alone. In a separate protest, activists gathered outside the Polar Beverages headquarters on June 30. They pushed for a two‑month boycott of the company’s products, starting July 1. The campaign was coordinated by Just Zero, a national nonprofit that champions zero‑waste practices, and joined by groups such as Plastic Free Massachusetts, Mothers Out Front, and Progressive Democrats of Massachusetts.
On Monday morning, June 29, a delivery truck clipped the front corner of La Scala Ristorante & Steakhouse at 183 Shrewsbury Street. The impact left the building with minor cracks and did not threaten its structural integrity, according to Worcester’s Inspectional Services Department. The neighboring 185 Bistro was nearly hit but escaped damage. Meanwhile, the construction of WuXi Biologics’ new facility in Worcester has resumed after a 2024 pause. The Chinese pharmaceutical company plans to finish the 189, 500‑square‑foot building by 2028. The project, which began in 2021 and is located at The Reactory life sciences park off Belmont Street, marks a significant addition to the city’s biotech landscape. These events illustrate how Worcester is juggling economic challenges, civic activism, and industrial growth all at once.
