Winter Storm Double Trouble: Snow Piles Up in D. C.

Early Monday, the D. C. area got hit with the first winter storm of 2025, dumping about half a foot of snow. But that wasn't the end of it! Another round of snow was expected in the evening, which could push totals into the double digits. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the area until 1 a. m. Tuesday. WTOP meteorologist Mike Stinneford predicted another 1 to 3 inches by midnight, making the total snowfall around 6 to 11 inches. That would make it the biggest snow event in nearly a decade. Schools across the region announced closures for Tuesday, and both Maryland and Virginia declared states of emergency.

The weather also caused Reagan National Airport to shut down its runways. Airport spokesperson Emily McGee explained that the closure was necessary to clear snow and slush before the extreme cold hit. Temperatures were expected to stay below freezing for the next few days, causing concern about refreezing on roads. Drivers should be cautious, as any melted snow during the day would turn into ice at night. The forecast for the week showed more cold weather with highs in the upper 20s to lower 30s. It's essential to stay off the roads unless necessary and let emergency personnel do their jobs.
