The popular video-sharing app TikTok might get a temporary stay from the US ban. President-elect Trump is mulling over issuing an executive order to halt enforcement of the law for 60 to 90 days. This comes after TikTok threatened to shut down if the ban goes into effect on Sunday. The law, passed in April, requires TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app. It bans new downloads from app stores if ByteDance fails to divest TikTok. Lawmakers and the Justice Department argue that TikTok poses a national security risk, but the app denies these claims.

TikTok's plan is extreme. It's reportedly going to shut down, greeting users with a pop-up message directing them to a website to download their data. The company's CEO, Shou Zi Chew, even met with Trump last month. The Supreme Court hasn't made a decision yet, and TikTok argues the law violates the First Amendment. There are talks about selling the brand, but TikTok dismisses some as rumors. With so many factors at play, it's unclear if TikTok will actually go dark or find a way to stay online. But one thing is for sure: the future of this popular app is uncertain.
