Will the United Nations Summit of the Future Change the Course of Humanity?
United NationsFriday, September 13, 2024
The Pact's lack of a bold vision and ineffective solutions is a slap in the face to those fighting for human rights and climate justice. We can't just rehash existing agreements and expect different results. Real change requires bold action, and the UN must lead by example.
The problem is not just the UN's inability to deliver; it's also the intentional barriers it has created to silence civil society organizations. If the UN continues to ignore the voices of those pushing for real change, it will squander this opportunity.
But, there is hope. Amnesty International has established a 2048 Commission to design a global governance system rooted in human rights. This Commission will work towards a system that upholds universal human rights and ensures they are protected in the face of rapid and unpredictable change.
As the Summit of the Future unfolds, it's crucial that member states remember their pledge to be accountable to "the peoples of the world" and start building a sustainable, human rights-based future.
