Will Mike Johnson Keep His Job as House Speaker?
Washington, USAFriday, January 3, 2025
The vote is important because the House needs a Speaker to certify Trump's 2024 presidential election win by Monday. If Johnson isn't re-elected on the first try, the process could drag on, like it did when McCarthy became Speaker after 15 rounds of voting. Johnson is confident, though. He met with some undecided Republicans on Thursday and thinks he'll win them over.
Some conservatives are upset with Johnson because he agreed to a deal with Democrats before Christmas to fund the government. But Johnson has been working closely with Trump and his team recently, which might make it hard for any other Republican to vote against him.
Even if Johnson keeps his job, he might still face challenges from the House Freedom Caucus, a group of very conservative Republicans. They could make it tough for him to pass Trump's agenda through the House.
