It's a delicate balance: efficiency vs. performance. In 2023, the USAF decided not to integrate the XA100 into the F-35 due to high conversion costs and integration concerns. They're sticking with P&W's Engine Core Upgrade for the F135. So, for now, the F-35 keeps its F135 engine.
