Why Tipping Without Taxes Might Not Be Good for Workers
Washington DC, USAFriday, November 1, 2024
Now, let's talk about fairness. Tips are given by customers, which means they can be influenced by biases. Research shows that people tend to tip white servers more than black servers, even when the service is the same. And for women, who make up a big chunk of tipped workers, tips often depend on how attractive they're perceived to be. This can lead to uncomfortable situations and even harassment.
So, while getting rid of taxes on tips might sound nice, it could make things worse for the workers who need the most support. Instead of just changing the tax rules, maybe we should think about better ways to support these workers.
