Why Hollywood Struggles with African Representation

When Ryan Coogler's "Black Panther" hit the big screen, many were excited to see a film focused on African superheroes. As a Kenyan-American, the casting of diverse Black leads was promising, giving hope that Hollywood would finally recognize different African narratives. However, the movie failed in many aspects, from mishandling accents to relying on tired African tropes and not involving enough African talent behind the scenes. Despite the film's box office success, Hollywood hasn't gotten much better with African representation. The problem lies in a lack of genuine inclusion of African creatives in the storytelling process. Without authentic African voices, characters often fall into stereotypes and misrepresentations. For instance, accents in movies are often ridiculously inaccurate, reducing diverse African dialects to a generic, Nigerian-like sound.

Film editor Prince Tido highlights the need for more collaboration with African filmmakers to ensure authentic storytelling. But Kenyan director Silas Miami argues that true collaboration requires honesty and a commitment to equity, not just equality. Hollywood's approach to African stories might be well-intentioned, aiming for Pan-Africanism, but it often falls short due to practical limitations. To improve, Hollywood must genuinely involve African creatives in telling their own stories. Africans also need to be more vocal about the misrepresentation and demand better portrayals of their cultures.
