A Scheme Unraveled by Suspicious Bets
Two former Fordham University basketball players—Elijah Gray and Will Richardson—are now facing permanent exclusion from college sports after an investigation uncovered their alleged involvement in a betting scandal.
The NCAA intervened after a third party overheard the players discussing plans to intentionally lose a game for financial gain. Their conversations, which took place in February 2024, triggered a deeper probe by state gaming officials, who detected suspicious betting patterns on the match.
A $10,000 Wager That Raised Red Flags
Investigators discovered that someone had placed a $10,000 bet on Fordham’s opponent to win the game. Further scrutiny revealed that both players followed the suspected bettor on social media, raising additional concerns.
Gray, a sophomore averaging 8.2 points per game in the 2023-24 season, eventually admitted to exchanging messages with a former NBA player and the bettor. He claimed he was offered $10,000 to $15,000 to throw the game but insisted he backed out at the last minute and played normally—Fordham still won.
Richardson’s Defiance and Contradictions
Richardson, who averaged 9.8 points per game and logged 27.1 minutes in the same season, took a different approach. He refused to cooperate with NCAA investigators, denied knowing the bettor, and even claimed he never discussed the matter with Gray.
Yet, phone records told a different story. Investigators found that Richardson contacted another teammate shortly after being questioned—a move that further damaged his credibility.
The Fallout: Level 1 Violations and Career-Ending Consequences
The NCAA classified their actions as Level 1 ethical breaches, the most severe category, effectively ending their collegiate careers.
For Gray, it was an admission of rule-breaking, though he insisted he never followed through with the scheme. Richardson’s lack of cooperation and contradictory statements only worsened his situation.
With their stats now irrelevant, both players are banned from future competition, a harsh reminder of the stakes in college sports integrity.
