In places where mass violence happens, people often struggle with their mental health. But here's something not many talk about: what happens when someone you know dies in one of these events?
A recent study dug into this, looking at adults from six communities that went through mass violence.
Key Findings
- Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- 41.7% had signs of PTSD in the past year
Nearly 1 in 5 had current PTSD
- Depression
- 22.8% met the criteria in the past year
- About 1 in 10 currently dealing with it
- Prolonged Grief
- Found in around 3.7% of people
Risk Factors
The study pointed to several factors that made people more likely to struggle:
- Previous trauma
- Little social support
- Heavy alcohol use
The Bigger Picture
This shows that people who lose someone they know in mass violence need extra support. It's not just about the big, obvious things. The smaller, personal losses can hit hard too.
However, the study only looked at six communities. What about other places? And what about different kinds of violence? There's still a lot we don't know.
