WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE CAPITOL?

As the US Congress gets ready to finalize Donald Trump’s win in the 2024 presidential election, there’s a lot of history — and tension — in the air. Four years ago, on the same date, Trump’s supporters sparked chaos during the vote count. This time, everyone expects things to go smoothly. Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump in November, will oversee the process. The Capitol Police have beefed up security to avoid any repeats of the 2021 riot. Back then, rioters stopped the certification of Joe Biden’s victory. They ransacked offices and forced lawmakers, including ex-Vice President Mike Pence, to hide.

Trump said he’d pardon some rioters if he wins again. But Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger worries this could put cops’ safety at risk. Though Trump won both the Electoral College and the popular vote this time, some congress members still have concerns. They’re hoping for a peaceful transition of power, unlike what happened in 2021. Over 1, 500 people have been charged for the 2021 riot, with about 1, 000 convicted so far. Five people died during or after the attack, including police officers who took their own lives.
