What is the Festival of Lights? A Closer Look at Diwali
IndiaThursday, October 31, 2024
In the south, Diwali remembers Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Naraka. In the north, it honors Lord Rama's return from exile. People also buy new clothes, gamble for good luck, and decorate their homes with colorful rangoli patterns. This year, some states are banning fireworks to fight pollution, which is a big change.
Other faiths have their own Diwali stories too. Jains remember the day their last great teacher, Lord Mahavira, reached nirvana. Sikhs celebrate the release of Guru Hargobind from prison. Buddhists mark the day Emperor Ashoka converted to Buddhism.
Even Barbie is joining the Diwali fun this year! Mattel released a Diwali Barbie dressed in a fashionable lehnga. She sold out quickly, showing how much people love this festival.
