Watch out! A Space Rock Nears Earth in 2032
Sunday, February 9, 2025
What if 2024 YR4 does hit Earth? Well, experts say it's unlikely to cause widespread damage. It's expected to be less powerful than the Chelyabinsk meteor, which exploded over Russia in 2013. That meteor was about 60 feet in diameter and injured over 1, 600 people, mostly from broken glass. But even that wasn't a catastrophic event.
Scientists have been busy thinking about what to do if an asteroid is on a collision course with Earth. They've got plans inspired by movies like "Deep Impact. " In 2022, NASA tested a vehicle called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART). This vehicle collided with a near-Earth object to see if it could alter its path. Some scientists have even talked about using nuclear weapons or other deflection tactics to push an asteroid off course.
Even with all these plans, tracking 2024 YR4 is getting harder. It's moving away from Earth, so astronomers need bigger telescopes to keep an eye on it. The good news is that 2024 YR4 should stay visible until April, and it won't be back in our neighborhood until 2028. With more observations, scientists hope to refine their calculations and make it even less likely to hit Earth.
