Watch Out: A Sneaky Jewelry Heist in San Francisco

San Francisco Bay Area, USAThursday, April 30, 2026
The city’s police are sounding the alarm on a new type of daytime robbery that targets older residents. In recent days, two men were caught after a series of violent thefts across the Bay Area. Investigators say the criminals usually appear on foot or in cars, striking up conversations with strangers before snatching valuables. They often focus on people who wear bright jewelry, especially seniors, and use tricks to make the theft look like a harmless gift. One incident happened on March 20 near 17th Avenue and Cabrillo Street. A plain‑clothed officer saw a white SUV with two men chatting with an elderly woman.
While the driver pretended to give her a necklace, a passenger grabbed her real jewelry and ran. The woman managed to warn the officers that she had just been robbed. Thanks to a special drone system, police located the car quickly. They used a spike strip to stop it safely and arrested both men without any trouble. A search of the vehicle turned up more stolen jewelry, foreign money, and the fake necklace used in the crime. The suspects face charges of robbery, conspiracy, grand theft and elder abuse. Police urge everyone to stay alert: if a stranger offers a gift or touches you, step back and call the police right away.
