Warning on Hidden Dangers in Fertilizer
USAWednesday, January 15, 2025
In the past, a company called 3M, which makes PFAS, found these chemicals in sludge samples back in 2000. They told the EPA about it in 2003. This means the problem has been known for a while, but now the EPA is making a public warning about it.
PFAS are linked to various illnesses, including certain types of cancer. When sludge with these chemicals is used as fertilizer, it can contaminate soil, groundwater, crops, and even livestock. This is a big deal because it means the chemicals can get into our food and water supply.
The EPA's warning is important because it highlights a potential danger that we might not have known much about before. It’s good to stay informed about these issues so we can understand the risks and maybe even take steps to protect ourselves.
