Walking Pneumonia: A Gradual Illness on the Rise

Lately, cases of mycoplasma pneumoniae, often referred to as "walking pneumonia, " have been increasing, especially among kids. This bacteria causes lung infections, but unlike other types of pneumonia, it comes on slowly and usually isn't severe enough to require hospitalization. Doctors have seen and treated this bacteria before, so it's not new. Symptoms can include headaches, fatigue, sore throat, fever, and cough. In younger kids, symptoms might be similar to a cold. If these symptoms last more than a week, it's time to see a doctor.

The rise in cases among kids might seem alarming, but doctors say it's not unusual. The pandemic kept respiratory illnesses low due to safety measures like masking and social distancing. Now that those measures are largely gone, we're seeing a return to pre-COVID levels of illness. There's no vaccine for mycoplasma, but antibiotics can effectively treat it. To prevent infection, follow regular hygiene practices like handwashing and staying home when sick.
