Voting Rights for All: A Personal Perspective on Legal Interpretation

I last-minute, voting rights are not just about the moment one decides to cast a ballot but also about the ability to navigate complex bureaucratic systems. As a lawyer who has worked on reenfranchisement cases in Florida, I’ve seen firsthand how legal interpretations can either open or close doors for citizens seeking to participate in democracy. One of my clients, a young Black man with quadriplegia, relied heavily on his elderly parents to help him obtain an ID. Despite their repeated attempts, they were unsuccessful.

This experience taught me that the right to vote isn’t isolated from other basic needs like housing and employment. In Florida, for instance, individuals with felony convictions not only lose their voting rights but also face significant barriers to state licensure, effectively trapping them in a cycle of limited opportunities. Ensuring that everyone can vote requires a holistic approach that addresses these underlying issues, breaking the cycle of exclusion and fostering a more inclusive democracy.
