Voters in LA Say Goodbye to Gascón

Election night brought a big change in Los Angeles County. District Attorney George Gascón, known for his progressive policies, was shown the door by voters. He got less than 40% of the vote, unable to stand up against former federal prosecutor Nathan Hochman's promise to clamp down on crime. Hochman spoke of a "safer future, " and it seems many voters agreed. Crime in LA has risen significantly in recent years, and voters saw Gascón's policies as part of the problem. His reforms, like eliminating cash bail and refusing to seek the death penalty, didn't sit well with people worried about safety. Even some of his own prosecutors took issue, with more than 20 suing for alleged retaliation.

The election comes after two failed recall attempts against Gascón. Voters also made other changes, like making some crimes tougher to commit once again. This included making repeat shoplifting a felony and upping penalties for certain drug offenses. Hochman's victory was significant, backed by police unions, victim advocacy groups, and even former district attorney Jackie Lacey, whom Gascón had beaten in his last election. He ran on a promise to make sure crimes are punished again, which seemed to resonate with voters.
