The 40,000-acre facility in Box Elder County is projected to consume up to 9 gigawatts of power, raising concerns over gas dependency, water consumption, and wildlife disruption. Yet O’Leary, who claims to be the only data-center developer with a background in environmental science, insists the project is designed with sustainability in mind.

In a recent X (formerly Twitter) video, O’Leary acknowledged the validity of worries about air quality, water usage, and heat emissions but argued they are solvable through advanced cooling systems, improved battery storage, and renewable energy integration.
However, skepticism persists. Last month, a military official revealed that the project would rely exclusively on natural gas, a move justified as a safeguard against Utah’s potential power shortages. Yet, with the Great Salt Lake shrinking and Utah’s arid climate, many locals fear the facility could exacerbate water scarcity and environmental degradation.

At a recent county meeting, residents voiced their opposition, holding signs emblazoned with "People before profits." Their concerns mirror a growing tension between AI expansion and community well-being, a clash O’Leary dismisses as overblown backlash—even suggesting some criticism is AI-generated, highlighting what he calls double standards.
