US War on Iran Costs Billions in First Days

Washington, USAFriday, March 6, 2026
The United States has spent about $3. 7 billion in the first 100 hours of its attack on Iran, a study says. That averages nearly $900 million each day. Most of the money goes to buying weapons, not to running the war itself. The research was done by a Washington think‑tank that looks at defense issues. The report notes that only a small part of the $3. 7 billion was planned in the budget. About $3. 5 billion was unplanned, meaning the Pentagon will probably ask Congress for more money soon. This could be a tough political fight, especially because the president had promised not to enter foreign wars. People at home already feel the pinch. Prices for food and gas are going up because of the war, so many Americans may lose support. The president’s supporters, who liked his “America First” message, are split over this conflict.
The Department of Defense has not shared many details. The study used numbers from the Congressional Budget Office and added a 10 % jump for higher activity. It found that more than 2, 000 munitions were used in the first 100 hours. Re‑buying them would cost about $3. 1 billion, and the price could rise by $758 million each day. The defense secretary said the bombings would increase. He mentioned adding more fighter planes, defensive gear and frequent bombing runs. Even if the pace slows later, the unplanned costs will still be large. In contrast, past U. S. operations had most expenses already in the budget. This new war will need extra money, perhaps a $50 billion supplemental request like those used in Iraq and Afghanistan. Politicians will likely see this as a chance to criticize the war. The human toll is also high. Iran has lost more than 1, 332 people, including about 181 children. Lebanon’s death toll from Israeli strikes is at least 123. In the U. S. , six soldiers have died, and eleven Israelis have been killed. Nine people in Gulf Arab states also lost their lives.
