Unplanned Detour: A Flight's Unexpected Journey
Monday, February 24, 2025
A reporter saw two fighter jets flying over the airport before the plane landed. Fire trucks were also seen near the plane. Neeraj Chopra, a passenger, said the captain announced a change in "security status" about three hours before they were supposed to land in New Delhi. The mood on the plane was calm at first, but Chopra felt stressed when the captain said fighter jets would escort them to Rome. He wondered what was really going on.
Another passenger, Jonathan Bacon, noticed the plane's sharp turn away from New Delhi and back towards Rome. Passengers had little to no internet connection for much of the flight. Bacon said the security screenings were thorough and took a long time. He and his friend were still waiting for their checked baggage more than two hours after landing.
The airport spokesperson said everything was operating normally. This wasn't the first time a flight had to change plans due to security concerns. It's a reminder of how quickly things can change in air travel.
