UNIFIL Under Fire: What’s Happening on the Israel-Lebanon Border?
LebanonFriday, October 18, 2024
So, what exactly is UNIFIL? It’s a peacekeeping force that’s been in Lebanon for over 45 years. It was created to help keep the peace after Israel invaded Lebanon in 1978. UNIFIL’s job is to make sure Israel withdraws from Lebanon, keeps peace and security, and helps the Lebanese government. They have a headquarters in Naqoura and posts all along the border with Israel.
UNIFIL troops come from 50 countries, like Indonesia, Italy, and India. They work in a big area between the Blue Line, which is like a border, and the Litani River. They have 50 posts and help keep the area safe, even though there are strongholds of Hezbollah around.
The UNIFIL mission is renewed every year, and it’s set to continue until August 2025. But with all the recent troubles, some people are wondering if the peacekeepers can really do their job safely.
