Uncovering the Unseen: The Uncus and Its Arterial Branches

In a recent anatomical study, researchers explored the relationship between the uncus and the branches of the anterior choroidal artery (AChA). They examined 124 hemispheres from 62 cadavers to gather data on the length of the AChA and the distances of its uncal branches. The average length of the AChA was found to be about 26. 24 mm, and the uncal branches were seen to originate from the AChA at an average distance of around 13. 48 mm. Surprisingly, 4 out of 124 AChAs didn't show any branches at all.

Out of the 594 branches detected, 130 were terminal branches. In 80 out of the 120 hemispheres, uncal branches were present. Interestingly, 30 of these uncal branches arose as the first branch of the AChA. The variability in the number of uncal branches originating from the AChA ranged from 1 to 4. On average, these branches tended to emerge from the midpoint of the AChA. The study also revealed that in 64 hemispheres, there were morphological variations in the origin of these uncal branches. The researchers believe that understanding these details can help in minimizing errors during surgical procedures, highlighting the clinical importance of their findings.
