UK's Starmer Meets Zelenskyy: A Century of Support for Ukraine
Kyiv, UkraineWednesday, January 22, 2025
The UK’s 100-year pledge is designed to provide that assurance, aiming to prevent future Russian aggression. The partnership covers defense against Russian maritime activity and technological advancements, such as drone cooperation. It also includes a system to track stolen Ukrainian grain. Starmer views this as a strategic failure for Putin, strengthening the bond between the two nations.
Starmer and Zelenskyy also discussed a proposal from France’s Macron, which involves stationing Western troops to monitor a ceasefire. Zelenskyy expects this to be coupled with a timeline for Ukraine to join NATO, a move Trump has been sympathetic to Russia about.
As the war persists, both Russia and Ukraine are seeking battlefield advantages ahead of potential peace talks. Ukraine has launched a new offensive in Russia’s Kursk region, while Russia presses forward at high casualties along the front line. The intense bombardment on Ukraine’s energy system continues, aiming to deprive Ukrainians of essential services in winter.
