Ukraine's Big Plan: Zelenskyy Sets the Stage for Victory
Kyiv, UkraineSaturday, October 19, 2024
Some parts of the plan are already known. Ukraine wants to join NATO, use Western long-range weapons to hit targets deep inside Russia, and get more resources to strengthen its defenses. They also want to increase sanctions on Russia. In August, Ukraine even launched a surprise attack in Russia's Kursk region, capturing some territory. This could be a bargaining chip in future talks.
NATO's Article 5 says an attack on one member is an attack on all. Ukraine joining NATO could stop Russia from invading again. But Western leaders are worried this could make things worse. They're also busy with other issues, like a conflict between Israel and Hezbollah that could involve Iran.
Zelenskyy has visited many Western capitals to share his plan. But no one has said they'll support it yet. The U. S. has been Ukraine's main backer, but they're worried using long-range weapons could make the war worse. They're also dealing with other problems.
Some expect the next U. S. president to keep doing what Biden is doing. Others aren't sure what the new president will do. Meanwhile, countries like Brazil and China have suggested their own peace plans. But Zelenskyy thinks these plans would just give Russia time to recover.
