Ukraine and North Korea Clash for the First Time in Russia

For the first time, Ukrainian troops have had a run-in with North Korean soldiers in Russia, according to Ukraine's defense minister. The fight happened in Russia's Kursk border region, where the North Korean soldiers were recently sent to help Russia in its war with Ukraine. This is a big deal because it's the first time North Korean forces have been directly involved in a European conflict since World War II. The Ukrainian officials said they fired artillery at the North Korean soldiers, but it's hard to confirm if there were any casualties because the North Korean soldiers are mixed with Russian troops and have misleading uniforms. Ukraine expects that five North Korean units, each with around 3, 000 soldiers, will be sent to the Kursk area. The U. S. , South Korea, and Ukraine have all said that North Korea is sending up to 12, 000 combat troops to help Russia. The Pentagon even said that at least 10, 000 North Korean soldiers are already in Russia near Ukraine's border. This is a big shift in European and Asian security relations because it's the first time in generations that East Asian troops are actively engaging in a European conflict.

The North Korean troops are adding to Ukraine's problems on the battlefield. Ukraine's defenses, especially in the eastern Donetsk region, are struggling because of Russia's non-stop attacks. Russia has recently gained more ground in Donetsk, up to 9 kilometers in some parts. Russia has more troops and is able to keep the pressure on Ukraine despite heavy losses. Ukraine has been complaining that Western military support takes too long to arrive. In early October, Russian forces took over Vuhledar, a key town in eastern Ukraine. They are likely targeting the logistics hub of Pokrovsk and the important city of Chasiv Yar next. Russia has also been bombing civilian areas in Ukraine. A recent attack in Zaporizhzhia killed six people and injured 23 others. Ukraine's presidential office has called for stronger action from Ukraine's Western allies to stop these attacks.
