Former Governor Christie Fires Blows at Trump Over Faith

Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie took a stand on ABC’s This Week, calling out former President Donald Trump for what he described as a shallow grasp of faith. Christie blasted the ex‑president’s recent remarks toward Pope Leo XVI as “gross,” arguing that Trump’s conversion to Catholicism does not provide a solid foundation for his attacks on the new American pope.

“Trump’s knowledge of Catholicism is comparable to a phone’s,” Christie quipped, suggesting the former leader knows little beyond basic facts. He added that Trump “likes both the New and Old Testaments,” a preference Christie labeled as “fake.”

Christie warned that Trump’s close ally, JD Vance, is unlikely to deviate from the president’s line on religious matters. He urged Vance to stop echoing Trump’s stance on faith issues and criticized the president’s approach toward Pope Leo, emphasizing the pope’s significance as the first American pontiff. Christie warned that Trump’s harsh comments could damage both the president’s and his party’s standing among Catholic voters.
