Trump's Climate U-Turn: US Leaves Paris Agreement Again
Washington, USATuesday, January 21, 2025
Critics are not happy. Rachel Cleetus from the Union of Concerned Scientists called the withdrawal “a travesty” that ignores scientific realities. While the US rejoined the Paris agreement under Biden and set ambitious climate targets, those gains might now be at risk.
Last year saw temperatures exceed the Paris accord’s target for the first time. The world is on track for a temperature rise of up to 2. 9C above pre-industrial levels. Trump’s actions could give China, a leading manufacturer of green technologies, an edge.
Yet, experts like Laurence Tubiana, a key architect of the Paris agreement, believe the accord is resilient. “The door remains open, ” she said, encouraging constructive engagement from all countries.
