Trump's Business Ties: A Fresh Ethical Dilemma

As Donald Trump prepares for his second term, his vast business empire is raising eyebrows. Back in 2017, he promised to keep his business, the Trump Organization, separate from his presidential duties. But his interests have grown, and so have the questions. He now owns a majority stake in Truth Social, a social media platform. Plus, his son Eric announced plans for a new Trump Tower in Saudi Arabia. Outside of his family, Trump has gotten close with Elon Musk, naming him co-chair of a new fiscal panel. This is a tricky situation because Musk's companies, Tesla and SpaceX, have big government contracts and investigations. An ethics expert, Steven Mintz, thinks this looks bad.

He said, "There's a pretty awful appearance of conflicts of interest. " A professor, John Pitney, agrees that Trump faces less risk of punishment, but he's not off to a good start. Some people say Trump doesn't care about traditional rules. Critics want him to sell his businesses before he starts his term. They think his failed lawsuit on the emoluments clause has made him care less about ethics rules. A watchdog group, CREW, says Trump's business deals show he won't even make small concessions to ethics. But Trump's team says he has a great team and didn't get into politics for profit. They think his critics are playing political games.
