Former President Trump has chosen Herschel Walker, a long-time friend and former football star, to be the next U. S. ambassador to the Bahamas. Their connection began in the 1980s when Walker played for Trump's team, the New Jersey Generals. Trump even mentioned his involvement in the team's strategy in his book "The Art of the Deal. " Despite concerns about Walker's personal background, Trump backed him during his unsuccessful Senate campaign against Raphael Warnock. It's important to note that Walker doesn't have any diplomatic experience or clear ties to the Bahamas. This isn't unusual for ambassadorial appointments to smaller nations. Often, these roles go to prominent figures like donors, politicians, or athletes, who are supported by career diplomats.

The nomination comes at a time when several Republicans who lost recent Senate races in Georgia are being considered for new roles. Kelly Loeffler, who lost her seat to Warnock, has been chosen to head the Small Business Administration. David Perdue, another former senator, is set to become the ambassador to China. The Bahamas hasn't had a permanent ambassador for over a decade. Several nominations have stalled due to inaction from the Senate. Both of Trump's previous nominees for the Bahamas ambassador post during his first term didn't make it through. President Biden's choice, Calvin Smyre, was announced in 2022 but still hasn't been confirmed.
