Tragedy Near Austin College Bar: Two Lives Lost

A sudden shooting outside a popular student bar in Austin has claimed two young lives and left many others wounded. The victims were 19‑year‑old Ryder Harrington and 21‑year‑old Savitha Shan, a university student. Authorities confirmed their identities after brief communications with families and official statements.

The incident happened just before 2 a.m. outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden, a spot known for attracting college crowds close to the University of Texas at Austin campus. The gunman, identified as Ndiaga Diagne—a 53‑year‑old naturalized American from Senegal—was also killed by police on the scene.

Investigators say they found items suggesting a possible terrorist link, including a sweatshirt bearing “Property of Allah” and a Quran in Diagne’s vehicle. This has raised concerns amid recent tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

The university confirmed Shan’s enrollment under her legal surname Shanmugasundaram. Campus officials described her as a devoted friend and future changemaker.
