The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, resulting in the deaths of ten people, including the suspected gunman.

  • Victims inside the school: 6
  • Victim dying en route to hospital: 1
  • Additional bodies found nearby: 2

The RCMP described the event as an active shooter situation. The individual believed to be the gunman was found dead with a self‑inflicted wound. Two people were air‑lifted to hospitals with serious injuries, while about twenty‑five others received treatment for less severe wounds at a local medical centre.

All students and staff were evacuated safely. Police are coordinating with the school district to reunite families, and continue searching other homes for additional clues.

Tumbler Ridge sits in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, north of Vancouver, with a population under 3,000. The community is still processing the shock of this event.

The RCMP declined to release details about the suspect’s identity and is investigating whether other sites were connected. Northern district commander Ken Floyd called the situation “rapidly evolving and dynamic,” praising community cooperation as officers push forward. Premier David Eby described the tragedy as “unimaginable” and pledged government support for affected families.

Canada’s gun laws are stricter than those in the United States. Yet recent mass shootings have led to calls for tougher controls. In 2022, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau implemented a freeze on the sale of handguns across the country.

The investigation continues. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
