The job of the director was to communicate with Cruise via radio.  This worked fine until Cruise decided to step out onto the wing.  The director had to fly his helicopter right next to Cruise to give him hand signals.

The conditions were brutal.  The wind was hitting Cruise at over 140 miles per hour.  It was so strong that it felt like he was on another planet.  The air was so thin that he could barely breathe.  The director had a stopwatch, timing how long Cruise could stay out there.  After about 12 minutes, the fatigue would start to take over.  Cruise, being the perfectionist he is, would often push himself to 13 minutes.  There was one moment when Cruise was so exhausted that he couldn't get back up.  He was laying on the wing, and no one knew if he was conscious.  The plane had only three minutes of fuel left, but Cruise managed to pull himself up and land the plane safely.  It was a incredible display of strength and determination.

The stunt was risky, but Cruise's dedication to his craft is undeniable.  He pushed himself to the limit, and it paid off.  The scene is sure to be a highlight of the film.
