Set against the backdrop of the Cold War in 1968, the story of "Honeytrap" unfolds with a unique twist. Max, a young man who is fluent in Swedish, is tasked with a secret mission by Stasi, an organization that trains agents to flirt and gather information from Westerns. The mission goes astray when he meets Inger, a young secretary working for a firm exporting weapons from Stockholm. Max's task was to charm and spy on secretaries at major Western companies. The story revolves around their transaction, an intense relationship between Max and Inger. Max must balance his mission and his affection for her, which puts him in a complex situation.  Their romance complicates his job.  The story includes emotional drama, intrigue and love which will keep viewers engaged.

The Cold War is the perfect backdrop for this narrative, creating a tense and intrigue. The historical context in this time has a significant role.  We even see the impact of the Russian invasion in Prague which will be unraveling in the story.   Two generations have grown up in a post-World War II world.  Viewers will have to consider the backdrop of the Cold War and the Russian invasion in Prague.  We must wonder how this reflects current day times.  We can see that  Max has a mother and grandmother back in Stockholm which will add more depth to his character. This defines the historical backdrop of the narrative.  This needs to be explored and compared to the current situation.

  The narrative also includes a lot of humor, especially in the portrayal of Stasi agents in Stockholm who are trying to learn more about Western women.  This adds lightheartedness to the story.  The director of the film "Honeytrap" had said this, "There is a lot of humor and love, " Scherfig insisted.  The absurdity of the situation is another element in the film.
