The Vice Presidential Candidates' Stances on Housing, Child Tax Credit, and Student Loans: What You Need to Know

Democratic vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance have both addressed key economic issues such as affordable housing, child tax credit, and student loans in the 2023 presidential race, but their approaches differ significantly.

Walz has taken a demand-side approach to affordable housing, signing legislation including $200 million for down payment assistance, housing infrastructure and workforce housing. Vance opposes institutional ownership of rental homes and Chinese buyers of U.S. real estate on this issue. On child tax credit, Minnesota's is now the most generous in the nation but permanent federal expansion faces challenges. Student loan forgiveness is opposed by Vance, who argues it would unfairly benefit rich and college-educated.
