The Vanishing Workers: Federal Office Ghost Towns
Monday, December 9, 2024
Now, let's talk about DOGE, the government efficiency panel. Headed by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, it's shining a light on these issues. The Biden administration didn't make much of a fuss about bringing workers back after federal unions protested.
Last year, Team Biden tried to push agencies to increase in-person work, but union leaders weren't having it. They said new guidelines couldn't override collective bargaining agreements.
Public-sector unions have always been a debatable topic. President Roosevelt once spoke against their power in the federal government. Ernst's work is a wake-up call to trim the fat and maybe even move some agencies out of DC.
The federal deficit won't disappear overnight, but slimming down the workforce is a step in the right direction.
