Meta's ambitious plan to inject artificial intelligence into celebrity chatbots has come to a screeching halt, just a year after its launch. The tech giant, which has been under fire for its AI-trained software's inaccuracies, had reportedly paid a whopping $5 million to a single influencer for a two-year pilot program that failed to generate any significant interest. So, what went wrong? Was it the creepy factor, or did the AI personas just not resonate with the public? 

The project, which aimed to create AI-powered chatbots featuring images of A-listers like Tom Brady, Charli D'Amelio, MrBeast, and Paris Hilton, was touted by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg last year. The plan was to license the celebrities' images for a chatbot that would interact with users on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Despite their offline popularity, the AI chatbots struggled to attract large followings. Snoop Dogg's "Dungeon Master" character, for instance, managed only 15,000 followers, a far cry from the rapper's real-life Instagram account with 87.5 million followers. Kendall Jenner's AI persona, "Billie," fared slightly better with 179,000 followers, but still fell short of the influencer's 194 million followers on Instagram.

So, what did Meta gain from this failed experiment? According to a spokesperson, the company gained valuable insights into how people use AIs to connect and create uniquely. Perhaps that's true, but it's hard to see the silver lining when the project was deemed a financial and public relations disaster.

As Meta moves forward, it's worth considering: What if this experiment was doomed to fail from the start? What if the company failed to account for the psychological impact of AI personas on the human psyche? What might have been overlooked in the rush to create something new and innovative?

 Meta is attempting to salvage its reputation by launching a new tool called AI Studio, which will allow users to create customized AI characters. But will this be enough to restore faith in the company's AI abilities? Only time will tell.
