They weren’t tweaking neural networks. Instead, they were assembling the largest image dataset ever: 14 million photos, each tagged with one of 22, 000 categories. This was ImageNet. Li’s mentors warned her she was going too far, too fast. Building such a massive dataset was a logistical headache, and many thought today’s algorithms wouldn’t benefit from it. But Li persevered, changing the game for machine learning.
Before ImageNet, machine learning relied on tiny data bites. People were focused on different AI strategies. Li’s project showed that with enough data, even old ideas like neural networks could lead to breakthroughs. This shift sparked the deep learning boom we see today.
