The U. S. is Watching China's Arctic Adventures
Arctic, USAWednesday, January 8, 2025
The U. S. diplomats are working to counter China's growing influence in the Arctic, where the Chinese icebreaker "Snow Dragon" has been spotted conducting research. This icebreaker could be involved in what's called "dual-use" research, which has both civilian and military applications. For example, research in the upper atmosphere could help China develop better missile tracking systems.
The U. S. is collaborating with its Arctic allies like Sweden, Finland, Norway, Iceland, and Canada to share information and strengthen security. They're also engaging with NATO to address these challenges. The U. S. Embassies in the Nordic region have been spreading awareness about China's activities and helping allies implement better research security practices.
