The Timing of Female Circumcision in Ethiopia: A Deeper Look

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a worldwide health issue. It's a non-medical practice that involves removing parts of the female genitalia. To understand the factors influencing when girls undergo FGM, researchers in Ethiopia analyzed data from the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS). They found that where a girl lives (rural vs. urban), her family's religion (Muslim vs. Christian), her parents' education levels, and her mother's age all play significant roles in the timing of her circumcision.

Interestingly, the mother's age and the family's wealth also change over time as risk factors. To tackle FGM, policymakers need to focus on education, especially for girls and women, and tailor awareness campaigns for both rural and urban areas. They must also respect cultural and religious beliefs while advocating for the health and rights of girls.
