The Spanish QUIC: How Early Life Chaos Affects Health

Early life unpredictability, like moving homes often or experiencing family conflicts, can have lasting effects on a person's mental and physical health. This is what the Questionnaire of Unpredictability in Childhood (QUIC) aims to measure. The QUIC has been used to understand how these early experiences, known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), can disrupt a child's development. However, many people around the world don't speak English, so translating the QUIC into other languages is crucial.

A recent study translated the QUIC into Spanish, creating the QUIC-SP, and tested it among Spanish-speaking adults. These adults were recruited online through Amazon Mechanical Turk. The QUIC-SP showed similar results to the English version, proving its reliability. Higher scores on the QUIC-SP, which indicate more unpredictability in early life, were linked to more symptoms of anxiety, depression, and poor physical health. This finding highlights the importance of understanding and addressing early life challenges in different cultural contexts.
