The Shift Away from Progressive Politics in California

Former Democratic donor Allison Huynh has seen a big change in California politics. She thinks that voters are turning against progressive policies. Huynh used to give money to the Democratic Party, but she's now unhappy with how they handle big city issues like in San Francisco. She thinks liberals are too focused on helping everyone, which ends up helping no one. Huynh believes the focus should be on Americans first, just like on a plane when you put your own oxygen mask on before helping others.

In the recent 2024 election, California saw a significant shift to the right. One example is Proposition 36, which reversed the lighter penalties for drug and theft crimes. Even in San Francisco, a tough-on-crime candidate, Daniel Lurie, beat the progressive mayor, London Breed. Huynh sees this as a sign that voters want change and want to feel safer in their cities. Huynh also notes that outside the big cities, most of California voted more conservatively. She thinks people are concerned about high crime rates, taxes, immigration issues, and the cost of living. Huynh even switched her vote to support Donald Trump because of her disappointment with the Democratic Party. She thinks San Francisco has become a failed experiment, with no safe streets and more drug users than high school students.
