The Rise of Unchecked Vapes Among Youth
Recent years have seen a sharp rise in vaping among young people across the United Kingdom. At the same time, an increase in the use of unregulated or “illicit” vape devices has become more common. There is little reliable information about how teenagers learn about these risky products, and what the media says on the topic is limited.
To fill this gap, researchers set out to examine two main sources of information: short videos posted on TikTok and educational materials that might reach students. They collected a wide range of content from both platforms, looking for themes, messages, and the overall tone.
The study found that TikTok videos about illicit vaping often focus on novelty, style, and social status. Many clips show teens flaunting new devices or claiming they are safer because they come from underground markets. The educational resources that were reviewed tended to be sparse and uneven in quality, with some providing basic facts while others offered little guidance.
A key takeaway is that the current media landscape does not give young people a clear, balanced view of vaping risks. Instead, they are exposed to flashy imagery and unverified claims that could encourage experimentation with dangerous products.
The research highlights the need for more comprehensive, evidence‑based information to be shared with students and parents. By improving the content on social media and school programs, authorities could help curb the spread of illicit vaping among youth.
