Physics Wallah, a relatively new Indian education technology startup, has made a significant splash in the industry by securing a whopping $2.8 billion valuation following a $210 million funding round. This remarkable achievement has raised eyebrows, especially given the challenges faced by ed-tech firms in the country. But what sets Physics Wallah apart from its competitors? 

Founded in 2020, Physics Wallah offers free and paid courses for various competitive examinations in India. What's unique about this startup is its mission to make quality education accessible to a broader audience, particularly those in poorer parts of the country. Alakh Pandey, the CEO, emphasizes that the company is not just catering to the top 1% of students, but rather the remaining 99% who cannot afford expensive coaching classes. 

Physics Wallah operates on a freemium business model, hosting its courses on YouTube for free. For students seeking more advanced features, such as homework and tests, there is a paid offering. The company's revenue has seen an impressive 250% year-on-year growth in the fiscal year ended March 2024, with Pandey predicting the highest absolute EBITDA in the current fiscal year. 

The startup is also open to acquisitions, provided they bring new content and users to the table. In fact, Physics Wallah has already made equity investments in other ed-tech companies, such as Xylem Learning, an ed-tech firm based in Kerala, India.
