Democracy thrives best when we focus on our similarities and respect our differences. But former President Donald Trump has often missed the mark. He tends to highlight our divisions instead of our shared interests. For example, he threatened to deport Muslims and immigrants, and suggested that Jews have split loyalties, which is an old antisemitic idea. This can make Jews seem less American to his supporters, putting them at risk. Trump's words and actions have real consequences. After a violent extremist march in Charlottesville, he said there were "good people on both sides." This is similar to a racist theory called the Great Replacement, which has led to attacks on Jewish, Black, and Muslim Americans. Unlike Vice President Kamala Harris, who values decency and opposes bigotry, Trump fails these tests. He even incites violence, as seen on January 6, 2021.

Trump's treatment of Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, reminds us of the Nazi stigmatization of Jews. He spread lies about Haitian immigrants, fueling hatred. He also praised Viktor Orban, a Hungarian leader with antisemitic views. This shows Trump's mindset and the danger he poses. Some people have even compared him to a dictator. We've seen the horrors of World War II and the hope that democracy brings. But if we don't take Trump's hatred seriously, history could repeat itself. We must stand up for our values and prevent this from happening.
