The Power of Placental Extracts in Healing Dry Eyes and Burns

Imagine you're a scientist, curious about how human placental extract (HPE) eye drops can help with dry eyes and burns. You decide to test it out on mice, comparing it to other treatments like carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and human peripheral blood serum (HPBS). First, you create models of dry eyes (EDE) and burns using mice, then you apply the different eye drops. For the dry eye model, you measure tear volume, how long tears last before breaking up (TBUT), and how much the cornea is stained with fluorescein. You also look at reactive oxygen species (ROS) and how many goblet cells are in the conjunctiva.

For the burn model, you check the size and diameter of the epithelial defects. The results? HPE eye drops improved tear volume, cornea staining, and epithelial apoptosis in dry eyes. They also showed better improvements in tear production, TBUT, ROS, and goblet cell density compared to CMC. In burns, HPE had smaller areas and shorter diameters compared to other treatments.
