They had two main ideas: the "glass half full/empty" view, where anchors change how sure we feel about our memory, and the "scale shift" view, where anchors mess up our scale judgments. Experiment one showed that when people predicted with just Yes or No, they got more confident with high anchors. But when the anchor wasn't helpful, it didn't impact their predictions.

Next, they checked if different scales for anchors and predictions mattered. Sure enough, informative anchors played a role when they used different scales. Lastly, they found that unhelpful anchors didn't affect results due to numerical priming, but because they skewed the scale. So, helpful anchors boost confidence, while unhelpful ones just twist our scales. Our memory judgment process depends heavily on the type of anchoring info we get.
