The Power of Left Atrial Strain: A Game Changer in Cardiovascular Disease?

Left atrial strain (LAS) is a relatively new way to gauge how well the left atrium, a crucial part of the heart, is working. Changes in LAS can hint at the development of cardiovascular diseases early on. This makes LAS a promising tool for spotting these diseases at an early stage, which could lead to preventive treatments. However, LAS isn't yet part of standard medical practice. Researchers decided to look into the evidence supporting the use of LAS to diagnose and predict the outcome of various heart diseases. They searched four databases (Medline, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL) for relevant articles published in the last five years and found 43 that met their criteria.

LAS showed promise in detecting specific heart issues. For instance, it could help identify paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in stroke patients, problems with the left atrial appendage in patients with heart failure and nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, and diastolic dysfunction in patients with arrhythmias, valve diseases, acute coronary syndrome, high blood pressure, and heart failure. Additionally, LAS could predict the future development of heart conditions. It showed potential in forecasting atrial fibrillation in hypertensive patients, cardiovascular events in patients with valve and heart diseases, and heart failure in patients with and without diastolic dysfunction. This review emphasizes the potential of LAS in identifying certain heart problems and how these issues might affect a patient's future. It encourages doctors to consider integrating LAS into their routine checks while stressing the need for more research to ensure it's safely and effectively used in clinical practice.
