The Power of Data in Urban Climate Action

In our race against time to cut greenhouse gas emissions, we're facing a crucial question: what exactly drives these emissions at an individual and community level? Despite knowing that we humans are the main culprits, we still have big gaps in our knowledge. To tackle this, a team created an urban decarbonisation framework using systems thinking. The goal? To help people and policymakers work together to reduce emissions. They also wanted to show how data can help.

A group of 172 people were asked to track their daily activities and lifestyle choices using a smartphone app. This data was then used to model greenhouse gas emissions. The results? They found out what drives these emissions and how they interact with the bigger urban decarbonisation plan. This research is a game-changer. It can guide us in reducing emissions at all levels – from individual actions to city-wide policies. By using this framework, we can make smarter decisions that speed up our shift to sustainability.
