The Mysterious Case of Bird Flu: A Health Care Conundrum
Missouri, USASaturday, September 28, 2024
The CDC is closely monitoring the situation, but it's been slow to get answers. The agency has collected blood samples from the five health care workers who fell ill, which will be sent to their headquarters in Atlanta for further analysis. The CDC is also studying a blood sample from the second household contact who became ill, but wasn't tested at the time.
This isn't the first time that Missouri has reported health care workers falling ill after treating a patient with bird flu. In the past, there have been rare instances where it was thought that person-to-person transmission had occurred, but ongoing chains of transmission have never been detected.
The investigation has been criticized for its slow pace, with some experts saying that public health credibility is at stake. The CDC relies on states to request their assistance, and since no request has been made, they have been unable to send investigators to Missouri.
